An Interview With… Sky Corgan

Our exclusive interview today finds us chatting with USA Today Best Selling Author, Sky Corgan.

We sent Beth, our editor, along to meet Sky. Here’s what happened:

Beth:
Today I’m very excited to be meeting with the Sky Corgan, romance writer with a flair for dark, gritty romance.

Sky:
Hey Beth, it’s great to meet you.

Beth:
Thank you so much for chatting with me today. I hope I’m not keeping you back from writing?

Sky:
No, it’s ok. My lifestyle is pretty relaxed unless there’s a deadline approaching. I’ve already completed my morning’s writing and been to the gym. I’m having a break now… I’d do some computer work after our interview, answering emails and the like, then a little nap to refresh my brain and another four or more hours this afternoon.

Beth:
That’s a pretty busy schedule, but it’s cool that you break your writing up two different times during the day. Do you listen to music when you write?

Sky:
No, I don’t. I need complete silence when I write. I’m unfortunately not one of those authors who can set up shop at a Starbucks.

Beth:
Yeah, I guess everyone’s different. Depending on the day and who’s working with me, BrazenHQ can be full of music or completely quiet too.

I’ve heard you started writing from a very young age. Can you tell me more about that?

Sky:
I actually wrote my first novel when I was twelve, but I didn’t publish my first book until 2012. So, I’ve been writing for… a number of years but I’ve only been publishing my books for five years now.

Beth:
Five years is a long time! From looking at your back catalogue and the sheer number of excellent reviews, you’ve certainly been busying releasing books that readers just love. You must be a fast writer.

Sky:
I do write fast, but I can’t force myself to write every day. Sometimes I’ll get writer’s block for days. It’s really frustrating.

Beth:
So, do you plot your stories out ahead of time or do you just sit down and see where they end up?

Sky:
In the beginning, I didn’t plot at all. Back then, I would get frequent writer’s block. Now, I plot out the vast majority of the books that I write. It makes things go a lot smoother.

This is the first year that I’ve ever planned out my entire year. Right now, I’m working on a stand-alone book that will be released in October called Beast. It’s a gritty dark romance.

Beth:
How do you celebrate finishing a book?

Sky:
If I’m on schedule with my writing, I’ll typically take a vacation after I finish writing a book to celebrate. A period of mental clarity where I don’t have to write really refreshes my brain.

Beth:
When you “switch off” are there any books you typically enjoy reading?

Sky:
For leisure, my favorite genres and young adult fiction and fantasy. I’m patiently waiting for the next A Song of Fire and Ice book to come out.

Beth:
I *love* George R. R. Martin too!

Thanks for meeting with me today, Sky. I’m looking forward to reading Beast when it comes out.
